Primary & SEN
At Tutor Doctor Bristol, nearly one third of the students we tutor are at primary level. It is important at this stage to help every child to develop confidence in numeracy and literacy.
Often, our tutors will combine Maths and English topics into a single lesson. From Reception to Year 6, we find that local parents really appreciate our handpicked tutors supporting and supplementing the formal lessons that the youngsters get in school.
Topics covered in English include
- Phonics mastery at KS1
- Reading, writing, text comprehension
- Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (which has an increased focus in Education today)
Topics covered in Maths include
- Number Bonds
- Basic Arithmetic (Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
- Times tables mastery
- Working out word problems and breaking down the calculations required
We can also help with other topics such as verbal and non-verbal reasoning for 11+ Exams.
Towards the end of primary school, most children will have to undertake SAT Exams. Also, to gain entry to the independent schools and grammar schools outside Bristol, some parents might opt to enrol their children for Eleven Plus or Common Entrance Exams. We have extensive experience in helping students achieve in these exams, are happy to advise on them, and match your child to a tutor from our team to prepare for them.
For young school children, being able to keep pace with what’s being taught can help them get off to a great start in their relationship with education. We believe it’s important that they feel comfortable in making mistakes, and through that, build their own confidence and resilience.
Within our own community in Bristol, the chronic underfunding of support for children with Special Educational Needs has also resulted in many parents coming to us for education support to fill in their learning gaps. In such cases, we guide our tutors to work with the child’s schoolteacher to design personalised intervention programmes to help the student(s) catch up and accommodate their learning needs.
