Preparing for the first day back to school

With the summer holidays zooming by, it’s easy to feel a little unprepared for the first day back to school. To make the most of the upcoming year, it’s always best for parents and students to plan ahead, especially throughout the last few weeks of the long break. Often the first couple of days back can feel hectic, so taking time to prepare will mean that everyone is feeling positive and eager to get back into the school rhythm. Here’s some ways to ensure you and your children have a successful start to the term.

Bring back school routines sooner rather than later
If long lie ins and late nights have become the norm, it’s crucial to bring back school routines such as usual sleep schedules and morning habits. Start by waking your kids up a little earlier and sticking to school appropriate bedtimes around a week before their first day back. This should help your kids slot right back into the right sleeping pattern, which will be one less worry for you. Getting a good night’s rest is linked to healthy brain function and emotional well-being, which is certainly a must for a good start to school. Re-introducing homework time is also a good idea. Even if this is half an hour a day of reading, writing or working in an academic work book, it will get them prepared for regular school weeks.

Check summer homework is complete
A couple of weeks before the new school year resumes, it’s important for you to check if your child was given any summer homework to complete over the break. Often kids forget to mention this right until the last minute, which isn’t fun for anyone. Avoid this by checking in with them every few days to see how they’re getting on with their workload and if they’re on track for the first day back. Buy school supplies gradually

We all know that a few weeks into the summer holidays back to school equipment is in every shop prompting parents to get ready! Instead of buying pens and rucksacks a few days before term begins, try and purchase items gradually. Start by writing a list of everything your child needs and keep it with you when you’re out. This will avoid a back to school rush of purchasing a long list of items which can be stressful and expensive. We also recommend encouraging your kids to recycle stationary and uniform from their previous term to cut down costs.

Review school information

For many parents, schools send home lots of information regarding new teachers, important dates for the new term, forms to fill out and transport information. Make sure you read through all of this information carefully and mark any dates in the family calendar.

Make an after-school plan

Finally, make sure there’s a plan in place for you kids after they finish the school day. This is important to avoid stress and worry for you and your children. Ensure they know how they are getting home, if they’re attending an after-school club or heading straight home. For older children, it’s also a good idea to set boundaries about what time you expect them home if they want to hang out with friends.
