How to Teach Your Child Responsibility

Categories: Education, Children, Tips

For any parent, teaching your child how to be responsible is bound to be a priority. Here at Tutor Doctor we believe the best lessons can be taught in the comfort of your own home. That’s why we’ve come up with some easy ways to help encourage your child to take responsibility and learn the importance of accountability.

Allow them to make their own decisions
A really easy way to help your child take responsibility is by allowing them make some of their own choices. This will also help them gain independence and build confidence in their own decision-making.

Assign Accountability
Give your child some responsibility around the house. Chores and small tasks might not seem like fun to them, however it’s a fantastic way to teach them that they can’t always depend on you and have to take responsibility themselves.

Give them independence
Giving your child some independence will encourage them to take responsibility without them even realising it. Start by letting them manage small parts of their morning routine. Tasks like getting dressed, making their own breakfast and waking up on time is certainly a great way to learn. Before you know it, they will be breezing through their morning routine and might even make breakfast for you!

Don’t Lecture
Avoid lecturing your child if they aren’t being as responsible as you’d hoped or don’t handle a situation how you would like. Even though this might be your first instinct, always guide them and talk through a situation instead. Ask questions, encourage them to think about it and how they can act differently in the future. Supporting them is the key in helping them realise where they have gone wrong or lacked in taking responsibility.

Lead by example
Kids learn by example, which is why it’s crucial that you set a good one. Take your own responsibilities seriously such as being on time, working hard and keeping your promises. Your kids are bound to soon follow in your footsteps.

Find books with great morals
Sometimes just finding a great book that illustrates responsibility is the best way to teach your child. Interesting characters and gripping storylines will grab their attention and they will often identify with them. The best thing about reading is that kids wont feel as though they are being nagged at or lectured and will learn responsibility themselves in their own time and own way.

Show them the bigger picture
Always remember that your end goal is for your child to act responsible because they want to, not because they are being told to. Explain how much they are helping you out, and how their positive input is valued and appreciated. Explaining to them how their actions affect others will encourage them to want to be a responsible in all aspects of life.

Finally don’t forget..
Teaching your child responsibility helps build their character and also makes them a more independent and reliable person. Teaching it now will build great foundations for the rest of their life and go hand in hand as your child’s responsibilities evolve as they grow. Finally, don’t forget to encourage your child and let them know when they are doing a fabulous job.
