Easy Ways to Make School Mornings Stress-Free

Categories: Children, Tips

Getting your children ready for school in the morning is certainly a challenge for any parent. Not only have you got to ensure that they have their text-books, lunch, homework and P.E kit, you’ve also got to try to make sure everyone leaves the house on time! Here at Tutor Doctor, we know that stressful mornings can result in a bad start to the day. That’s why we’ve come up with some easy-peasy changes that will help make school mornings as stress-free as possible. Before you know it your mornings will be running smoothly and might even be quite peaceful!

Prepare the night before
One of the easiest ways to make your mornings run smoother is by changing around your routine a little. If you’re used to organising everything for your kids in the morning, then try preparing the night before instead. Not only will you find that you’re in a calmer state of mind, you will also be surprised how much free time you have!

  • Prepare school uniform

One of the quickest things to organise the night before is school uniform. Start by encouraging your children to get in the habit of checking that they have everything they need to wear for the following day and laying it out ready. Pre-planning clothes will help you steer clear of early-morning getting dressed battles as well as avoid running around trying to find a matching pair of socks or a clean shirt just before you need to leave.

  • Do school admin

This really won’t take any time at all, but will make all the difference! Take 10 minutes to assemble the kid’s dinner money, sign school trip forms and check school bags for any stray letters that might be important.

  • Lunch made easy!

If your kids have packed lunches, preparing them the night before will be a huge time-saver, especially when all you should be thinking about is breakfast!

  • Homework

Making sure that your children complete all their homework the night (or a few nights) before it’s due in will mean that there are no last minute panics. Nobody wants to be helping with math’s homework first thing in the morning! Remember- once your kids have competed their assignments, double check that they have put them in their school bags!

Stick to a routine
Having a set routine in the morning will be hugely beneficial. Start by making sure your children know what you expect from them each day. For example, do they need to be fully dressed before breakfast and clean their teeth straight afterwards, or should they eat breakfast first then get dressed? Once you’ve put a regime in place, you’ve just got make sure everyone sticks to it.

Top Tip! Having a no TV rule in the mornings is guaranteed to speed things up- it is too much of a distraction!

Have a family calendar
Regardless of if you have a big or a small family, having a family planner or calendar will be super useful. Whether it’s after-school clubs, music lessons or football practice, note down who needs to be where and when. This way you will know exactly what’s going on and it will also help you know what your child needs to take to school with them.

And finally.. Allow time for yourself
It’s important that amongst the morning chaos that you take five minutes (or longer) for yourself. If that’s having a cup of coffee, reading a chapter of your book or having 10 minutes longer in bed, leaving yourself enough ‘me’ time will ensure that you start the day in the right frame of mind.
