The summer holidays are finally here, meaning lots of beach breaks, family holidays abroad and plenty of opportunities for your kids to go outside and enjoy the outdoors. Here at Tutor Doctor we know how important it is to you that your kids stay safe, healthy and happy this summer. That’s why we’ve created this important post all about summer safety for your children!
Swimming and other water activities are brilliant ways for your children to get active and have fun during the summer break! Even though having fun is great, it is even more important to stay safe, so here are just a few things to remember when it comes to water safety.
- If your kids are in or near the water it’s crucial to closely supervise them at all times.
- If your child can’t swim or isn’t a strong swimmer always make sure they are wearing armbands or a lifejacket. However, if you are taking a boat trip or your child is around deep water, no matter how well they can swim- they should be wearing a lifejacket.
- If you are going to spend the day at the beach, always check that there is a lifeguard on duty. Remember they are there to help, so don’t be afraid to ask them where the safest area is to swim and if there are any dangerous currents or tides. Stay safe in the sun
As soon as the sun comes out it’s not long before everybody is outside making the most of it. Regardless of whether you are on holiday, or just enjoying a day at the park- making sure your children are protected from ultraviolet (UV) rays is super important. Here are some things to remember!
- Even though the kids will want to enjoy the sunshine, it’s important to seek shade when necessary. UV rays are most harmful around midday, so find a shady spot, grab an umbrella or go inside and enjoy a spot of lunch.
- Sun cream is your best friend when it gets hot outside. Use one with a SPF of at least 15 every time your child goes outside and for extra protection apply 30 minutes before, not forgetting all those awkward areas such as their ears, nose, lips and feet!
- Sunglasses and hats are vital when it comes to sun safety for children. Hats not only shade the face, ears, scalp and neck but sunglasses protect your child’s eyes from harmful UV rays.
General Outdoor safety
If your kids are playing outside in the park or in your back garden it may seem harmless, however hazards can sometimes be hidden. Follow these tips to make sure your children are safe no matter where they are this summer!
- Stay safe in the playground by reading important signs and making sure your children are using the equipment safely and that it’s suitable for their age.
- Wherever you are, always do a quick check for hazards, such as rocks, tree stumps or sharp objects. If you spot anything either remove it or make sure your child is aware.
- If your children are walking/playing near busy roads, make sure they know how to cross over safely and have a sound knowledge of the green cross code.
- If you really want to be clued up on health and safety, why not consider taking a short first aid course? It means you will have a great knowledge base and be well equipped in case of a summer emergency.
