Being a tutor is a great way to build transferable skills, like communication, creativity, adaptability, critical thinking, problem solving, and leadership, so no matter your plan for the future, tutoring can help you get there!
Tutoring is a great way to discover if you have a true passion for education and supporting students in their learning, which is essential for being a teacher. It will allow you to test out your current skills and see if an educational role might be right for you. Just remember, as a tutor you will typically work with students one-to-one, or in a small group setting, for a few hours each week. That dynamic does differ from supporting a full class of students each day. Tutoring may help you decide if education is the right career path for you to explore, but it will not give you the same experience as being a classroom teacher.
If you’re thinking of becoming a tutor, then we’d love to hear from you! Please complete our Become a Tutor application and we will be in touch.

There are distinct differences between how we work with families and with schools.
In-Home Tutors:
- Personalised Learning Environment: As an in-home tutor, you’ll provide one-to-one tutoring sessions that are tailored to the individual learning style and needs of each student.
- Comfort and Convenience: Your tutoring sessions are conducted in the comfortable setting of the student’s home or online, creating a safe and familiar environment for learning.
- Direct Parental Involvement: You’ll be able to speak with the child’s parents to receive feedback on how you can better support them, and stay actively involved in their child’s academic progress.
- Build Relationships: You’ll work with your students on a regular basis, and witness first-hand how your tutoring sessions have a direct and positive impact on their lives.
In-School Tutors:
- Collaboration with Schools: As a tutor delivering in-school tuition, you’ll work in partnership with schools and local authorities to provide targeted support to groups of students. This is designed to help schools close the education gap, especially for disadvantaged students.
- Managed Curriculum: When working in-school, you may follow a curriculum that aligns with school objectives and standards, or you may deliver on a custom curriculum as needed. This ensures that the tutoring support complements the students’ regular education and targets specific areas for improvement identified by the school, or by yourself as the tutor.
- Access to Resources: You may have access to a range of educational resources and support from the school and programme coordinators, enhancing the tutoring sessions’ effectiveness when necessary.
- Impact on a Wider Scale: Through one-to-one and small group tutoring, tutors within this programme have the opportunity to impact the lives of many students.
Tutor Doctor Norwich has a 5-step process that we go through when working with schools and local authorities. We start by scoping and planning, then move on to gathering more in-depth information from the school. We’ll then finalise a plan that works for them and deliver on the tutoring sessions. Finally, we’ll review our progress regularly and make any needed changes.
This helps us to deliver on our mission and promise of changing our students’ lives and gives you valuable feedback on your own tutoring sessions and professional development. To learn more about our work with schools, visit our page here.
