Mark Butler
Tutor Doctor Reading Wokingham Maidenhead

Mark Butler

When Mark Butler's sons were in secondary school, he saw first-hand how many families struggle to find the right educational support, which inspired him and his wife Joanna to launch Tutor Doctor across Reading, Wokingham, Maidenhead and Walton-on-Thames in 2014. Mark brought years of business experience from his successful career in international stock photography, whilst Joanna had run her own podiatry practice, but they chose to redirect their skills towards something that would truly serve their local community. Over the past decade, they've delivered more than 118,000 hours of tutoring to pupils from primary through to A-Levels and adult learners. Mark personally conducts consultations with every family to understand their child's specific needs, then draws from his carefully vetted network of tutors to find the perfect match - he interviews every tutor in person as part of his commitment to quality control. All tutors are background-checked, and Mark ensures they're not just academically qualified but also the right personality fit for each pupil, providing one-to-one support that helps children build both knowledge and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does your one-to-one tutoring process work in Berkshire, and how soon can we start?

It starts with a free consultation. We learn about your child’s goals, current attainment, learning style, and timetable. We then create a learning plan and match your child with one of our local tutors who fits both the subject need and personality.

Lessons take place in your home or online. After every session you receive a written progress report. Our local team stays in touch to make sure everything is working well.

Start times vary. It depends on tutor availability and your schedule. After your consultation we move quickly and prioritise urgent cases such as Year 11 revision.

We offer tutoring in Berkshire across:
– Reading, Caversham, Tilehurst, Whitley, Earley, Woodley, Winnersh
– Wokingham, Bracknell, Crowthorne, Sandhurst
– Windsor, Eton, Maidenhead, Ascot, Cookham, Bray, Datchet, Old Windsor, Wraysbury
– Slough, Langley, Cippenham, Colnbrook, Britwell
– West Berkshire: Newbury, Thatcham, Hungerford, Calcot, Pangbourne, Theale, Purley on Thames
– Nearby areas: Twyford, Sonning, Wargrave, Henley-on-Thames, Sonning Common, Goring-on-Thames, Wallingford, Didcot, Abingdon-on-Thames, High Wycombe, Marlow, Beaconsfield, Amersham, Chesham, Gerrards Cross, Burnham, Taplow, Farnham Royal, Egham, Addlestone, Chertsey, Camberley, Frimley, Bagshot, Lightwater, Farnborough, Aldershot, Fleet, Yateley, Hook, Hartley Wintney, Basingstoke, Tadley, Marlborough, Ramsbury, Aldbourne, Pewsey.

Private tutoring is common in England. Around 30% of 11 to 16 year-olds report having had tutoring at some point. If you are considering tutoring in Berkshire, book your free consultation to get started.

Will tutoring align with my child's Berkshire school curriculum and exam boards?

Yes. Our local tutors teach to your child’s current topics and the requirements of their exam board. We stay updated with curriculum changes and school assessment points so lessons reinforce what is happening in class. For exam years, we build exam technique, marking criteria awareness, and targeted revision using past-paper style tasks. This alignment helps your child keep pace with lessons at schools across Reading, Wokingham, Maidenhead, Slough, Bracknell Forest, West Berkshire, and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

What subjects and exam levels do you support in Berkshire?

We support primary, secondary, GCSE and A-Level students across Berkshire.

Typical areas:
– Primary: reading, writing, spelling, grammar, Maths, confidence building
– KS3: Maths, English, Science, languages, humanities
– GCSE: Maths, English Language and Literature, Combined and Triple Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, French, Spanish and more
– A-Level: Maths, Further Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Economics and other major subjects

If you have a niche subject or international curriculum request, it depends. Tell us what you need in the free consultation and we will advise on the best fit.

Can you help with GCSE and A-Level revision in Berkshire, including mock-to-final improvement?

Absolutely. We start with a short diagnostic to find gaps from mocks or class tests. Then we build a focused plan that combines:
– Core knowledge consolidation
– Exam technique and timing
– Mark scheme awareness and targeted practice
– Confidence and stress management strategies

Lessons are one-to-one at home or online with clear goals each week. Parents receive a session report after every lesson so you can see what was covered, strengths, next steps, and any optional practice.

Local families see real impact. One Berkshire parent shared, “My son achieved a much higher science result than predicted thanks to Rachel’s support.” While every student is different, many see 1 to 2 mark improvements from mocks to finals with consistent, targeted revision.

Do you offer 11+ preparation in Berkshire and nearby selective areas?

Yes, in selective areas. Our 11+ preparation is tailored to your local format and covers:
– English and Maths foundations
– Verbal and non-verbal reasoning
– Timing, question selection, and exam technique
– Confidence and mindset for the test day

11+ preparation is available in grammar school areas only. If you are unsure whether this applies to your address, ask during your free consultation and we will confirm the local picture for Berkshire and nearby counties.

How do you support students with special educational needs or neurodiversity in Berkshire?

Every child learns differently. Our local tutors adapt pace, resources, and teaching style to match your child’s needs, including dyslexia, ADHD, autism, anxiety, or processing and working memory challenges. We keep instructions clear, use scaffolded tasks, and build routines that reduce cognitive load. If you have existing support plans from school, we can align with them and maintain a common approach. The focus is to rebuild confidence first so progress follows.

How do you track progress and keep Berkshire parents informed?

You receive a written session report after every lesson. It summarises what was covered, how your child performed, and suggested practice before the next session. We set short, measurable goals and check them regularly. Your local Tutor Doctor team also checks in to review progress and adjust the plan if needed. This means you always know how tutoring in Berkshire is helping your child move forward.

How are your tutors vetted and trained to work with children in Berkshire?

Safety and quality are central. Tutors go through a multi-stage interview, reference checks, and must hold an enhanced DBS check. They complete safeguarding training and follow our code of conduct. We provide ongoing oversight, review session reports, and support tutors with curriculum and exam updates. Tutor Doctor is a proud member of The Tutors’ Association, and your local team remains your point of contact throughout.
