Frequently Asked Questions

How do you tailor one-to-one tutoring to schools in the City of Leeds?

We start with a free consultation to learn about your child’s school, exam board, targets and how they like to learn. Our local tutors plan lessons that follow the National Curriculum and align with the way Leeds schools teach, including AQA, Edexcel and OCR specifications for GCSEs and A-Levels. We coordinate with current class topics, set focused revision tasks and use past papers and official mark schemes so practice feels familiar. Independent evidence shows tutoring helps in Leeds. Primary pupils who received maths tutoring in Leeds were 20% more likely to meet the expected standard than other disadvantaged pupils nationally, which shows how targeted support can close gaps. We bring that same targeted approach to every learner we support.

Which subjects and exams do you support in the City of Leeds?

We provide tutoring in the City of Leeds across primary, secondary and post-16:
– Primary and SATs: phonics, reading, writing, maths and SATs preparation.
– KS3: core subjects to rebuild foundations and confidence.
– GCSE: English Language and Literature, Maths, Combined or Triple Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Computer Science, French, Spanish and more, subject to availability.
– A-Level: Maths, Further Maths, the Sciences, English, Psychology, Economics, Business, History, Geography and others, subject to availability.
– 11+ where relevant to selective areas only. Families sometimes ask for preparation for nearby grammar schools outside Leeds, such as Heckmondwike Grammar (Kirklees) or Ripon Grammar (North Yorkshire). If you are not sure whether the 11+ applies to you, just ask in your consultation.
If you need a subject not listed here, we will check local tutor availability for you.

How does the tutor matching process work for families in Leeds?

We match on more than subject. After your free consultation, we build a profile of your child’s goals, personality and learning preferences. We then introduce a tutor who fits that profile and has the right subject expertise and exam-board knowledge. Your first sessions focus on a baseline check and quick wins. You receive a session report after each lesson. If the chemistry is not quite right, we will rematch. Parents tell us the right fit makes the difference. One recent local review said, “The tutor they provided was great and has made a big difference.”

Can you support pupils with SEND or English as an Additional Language in Leeds?

Yes. Leeds has a high proportion of EAL learners and a significant SEND cohort, and our local tutors are experienced in adapting teaching to individual needs. We can use scaffolded tasks, visual supports, structured routines and chunked instructions, and we pace learning to reduce overload. Where there is an EHCP or school support plan, we work in line with it. For EAL learners we build vocabulary and comprehension alongside subject content so students can access the curriculum with growing confidence.

How do you track progress and keep parents informed?

We begin with a short diagnostic to identify strengths and gaps. Your tutor then agrees clear goals and a plan. After every session you receive a report that outlines what was covered, how your child did and the next steps. We review progress at agreed intervals and adjust the plan when needed. For exam years we use past papers under timed conditions and mark to the correct exam-board scheme, so you can see movement towards target marks and where to focus revision next.

How soon can we start after mock results, and what might the first few weeks look like?

Timeframes depend on subject and tutor availability, but we aim to organise your consultation quickly and confirm a suitable match as soon as possible. For Year 11 after mocks, the first weeks usually include: a focused diagnostic on the weakest topics; an agreed revision timetable around school commitments; weekly one-to-one sessions that mix content review with exam technique; regular retrieval practice and past-paper questions; short parent check-ins and session reports so everyone stays aligned. If exams are close, we prioritise high-yield topics and techniques that help secure marks efficiently.

How are your tutors vetted and what qualifications do they hold?

Our local tutors are subject specialists with proven experience. Many are qualified teachers or graduates with strong academic backgrounds. Every tutor completes a multi-stage interview and reference checks, provides an enhanced DBS check, and undertakes safeguarding training. Your Tutor Doctor Northwest Leeds team also provides ongoing oversight, including reviewing session reports and checking in with families. We are proud members of The Tutors’ Association, which reflects our commitment to professional standards.

We regularly support families in City Centre, Headingley, Hyde Park, Woodhouse, Kirkstall, Burley, Armley, Hunslet, Beeston, Holbeck, Chapel Allerton, Chapeltown, Harehills, Gipton, Seacroft, Halton, Cross Gates, Roundhay, Moortown, Adel, Alwoodley, Cookridge, Hawksworth, Far Headingley, Bramley, Farnley, Middleton, Belle Isle, West Park, Oakwood, Little London, Leeds Dock, The Calls, Wortley, Morley, Pudsey, Horsforth, Garforth, Kippax, Rothwell, Guiseley, Yeadon, Otley, Wetherby, Bramhope, Farsley, Calverley, Gildersome, Drighlington, Collingham, Boston Spa, Bardsey and Harewood.
