Tutor Doctor Harrogate

Michael Richmond-Coggan

After 16 years at Leeds City College, Michael Richmond-Coggan launched Tutor Doctor Harrogate to ensure every pupil receives the individual support they deserve. His extensive experience in alternative and adult education, combined with his role as governor at Leeds West SILC, means he understands the challenges families face when traditional schooling isn't working. Michael takes particular pride in helping parents navigate EHCPs, Personal Budgets, and EOTAS packages, drawing on his background managing Foundation Studies at one of the UK's largest FE colleges. Since becoming a franchisee in 2018, he's delivered over 7,000 hours of tutoring support to local families. What sets his approach apart is the personal touch — Michael meets every family himself, often over a cup of tea (milk and one sugar!), to understand each pupil's needs before carefully matching them with one of his dedicated local tutors. His commitment to changing pupils' lives through quality, personalised education has helped hundreds of local families find academic success and renewed confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you match my child with the right tutor in Harrogate, United Kingdom?

We start with a free consultation to understand your child’s goals, confidence level, learning style and the exact syllabus they are following at school. We then hand-pick one of our local tutors with the right subject expertise, key stage experience and personality fit. The first session can take place in your home or online. We review how things are going, share session reports after every lesson, and adjust the plan so your child stays on track.

Do you align tutoring with the local curriculum and exam boards used in Harrogate?

Yes. Our tutoring is planned around your child’s school scheme of work and exam board. In Harrogate this often means following the National Curriculum at primary and working to AQA, Edexcel or OCR specifications at GCSE and A-Level. We focus on assessment objectives, exam technique, topic sequencing and regular retrieval practice with past paper questions. Whether your child attends Harrogate Grammar School, St Aidan’s, St John Fisher, or another local school, lessons are mapped to what they are doing in class so progress is immediate and relevant.

Which subjects and year groups do you support with tutoring in Harrogate, United Kingdom?

We provide one-to-one support from primary through to sixth form:
– Primary (KS1 and KS2): reading, phonics, writing, spelling, maths and SATs preparation
– KS3: English, maths, sciences and study skills
– GCSE: maths, English language and literature, biology, chemistry, physics, combined science, history, geography, French, Spanish and computer science
– A-Level: maths, further maths, biology, chemistry, physics, English, economics, psychology, sociology and more
– 11+ where relevant to grammar school entry in nearby selective areas such as Ripon Grammar School
– Resits, Functional Skills and structured revision planning
If you do not see a subject listed, ask us. If we can help, we will match you with a subject specialist.

How do you track progress and keep parents in Harrogate informed?

You receive a session report after every lesson with what was covered, targets, any practice tasks and next steps. We agree clear goals at the start, then measure progress with:
– Regular check-ins and milestone reviews
– Past paper question banks and topic checklists
– Mock paper analysis and targeted revision plans
– Feedback on confidence and learning habits
This transparency helps you see steady gains in understanding, confidence and results.

Can you support students with special educational needs or low confidence?

Yes. Our one-to-one model lets our local tutors tailor pace, resources and routines to each learner, including students with dyslexia, ADHD and autism profiles. We build confidence first with small wins, clear modelling and bite-sized tasks, then extend to exam technique. Sessions can take place in your home or online to suit your child. A recent Harrogate parent told us: “In just a few months, we’ve seen such a change — not only in our son’s maths scores, but in his confidence and overall attitude toward school.”

How do you vet your tutors and keep students safe?

All tutors go through a multi-stage recruitment process that includes interviews, reference checks and subject knowledge screening. Every tutor holds a background check and completes safeguarding training before working with students. We are proud members of The Tutors’ Association and follow its Code of Practice. We also review tutor session reports and maintain regular contact with families to ensure quality and safety throughout.

Do you offer in-home and online tutoring across Harrogate and nearby areas?

Yes. We provide tutoring in your home or online across Harrogate, United Kingdom, including Oatlands, Woodlands, Bilton, Jennyfields, the Duchy estate, Starbeck, Pannal, Burn Bridge, Harlow Hill, New Park and Wheatlands. We also serve Knaresborough, Ripley, Killinghall, Hampsthwaite, Birstwith, Kirkby Overblow, Follifoot, Weeton, Burton Leonard, Bishop Monkton, Scotton, Staveley, Ripon, Wetherby and Otley. Families on the borders of North Yorkshire Council, Leeds City Council, City of York Council and Bradford Metropolitan District Council are welcome to enquire. Online tutoring is available UK-wide.

When should we start tutoring for GCSEs or A-Levels in Harrogate, and how quickly can you begin?

Starting in Year 10 helps build strong foundations before pressure rises. After initial assessments, focused support can still lift marks with the right plan. Intensive revision periods offer key opportunities, and even short, targeted tutoring before final exams can improve technique and confidence. How fast we can begin depends on subject, level and availability, but after your free consultation we usually match quickly and arrange the first session as soon as possible.
