Mark Butler
Tutor Doctor Reading Wokingham Maidenhead

Mark Butler

When Mark Butler's sons were in secondary school, he saw first-hand how many families struggle to find the right educational support, which inspired him and his wife Joanna to launch Tutor Doctor across Reading, Wokingham, Maidenhead and Walton-on-Thames in 2014. Mark brought years of business experience from his successful career in international stock photography, whilst Joanna had run her own podiatry practice, but they chose to redirect their skills towards something that would truly serve their local community. Over the past decade, they've delivered more than 118,000 hours of tutoring to pupils from primary through to A-Levels and adult learners. Mark personally conducts consultations with every family to understand their child's specific needs, then draws from his carefully vetted network of tutors to find the perfect match - he interviews every tutor in person as part of his commitment to quality control. All tutors are background-checked, and Mark ensures they're not just academically qualified but also the right personality fit for each pupil, providing one-to-one support that helps children build both knowledge and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does your tutor matching work for tutoring in Shinfield?

It starts with a free consultation. We speak with you to understand your child’s goals, current school topics, mock or test results, learning style, and what has or has not worked before. We then introduce a carefully chosen local tutor who fits your child’s subject needs and personality. Lessons are one-to-one at home in Shinfield or online. After each session, you receive a report so you can see progress and next steps. Your local Tutor Doctor team stays in touch and adjusts the plan as needed. Book your free consultation to get started with tutoring in Shinfield.

Do your tutors follow what local schools in Shinfield and Wokingham are teaching?

Yes. Our local tutors align tutoring to the National Curriculum for England and to what your child’s school is covering that term. We review school schemes of work, homework, and assessment feedback. For GCSEs and A-Levels, we teach to your child’s specific exam board, and we focus on past papers and exam technique. For Year 6 SATs, we cover arithmetic, reasoning, and spelling, punctuation and grammar. Local KS2 data from Shinfield St Mary’s shows that around 30% of pupils did not meet the expected standard in maths, so we place strong emphasis on core number skills, problem solving, and confidence building where needed.

Can you help with GCSEs, SATs and the 11+ in the Shinfield area of the United Kingdom?

We support all key stages. For GCSEs, we create a focused plan that targets gaps from mocks, builds exam technique, and supports revision from now through the final exam window. For primary, we help pupils prepare for Year 6 SATs with targeted practice in maths, reading and SPaG, always with confidence first. We can also support 11+ preparation where it applies to selective schools in the wider Reading area. If you are not sure whether the 11+ is relevant for your family, ask during your free consultation and we will advise.

How do you track progress and keep parents in Shinfield informed?

You receive a written session report after every lesson. This outlines what was covered, how your child responded, and the plan for next time. We set clear goals at the start, such as meeting a target GCSE mark or securing the expected standard in SATs. We review against school assessments, mock marks and teacher feedback. Your local Tutor Doctor team checks in regularly so the plan stays on track and any changes at school are reflected quickly at home.

Can you support students with special educational needs or EAL in Shinfield?

Yes. Many of our tutors have experience supporting students with ADHD, dyslexia, autism and anxiety, as well as learners who use English as an Additional Language. We keep instructions clear, break tasks into small steps, use multi-sensory methods where helpful, and build routines that reduce stress. Confidence comes first, then skills and marks follow. With your permission, we can align with strategies used in school so your child gets consistent support in both settings.

Are your tutors vetted and safe to work with children in Shinfield?

Safety is essential. Our tutors go through a multi-stage selection process that includes interviews, reference checks and an enhanced DBS check. They complete safeguarding training and follow our safeguarding policies. We are proud members of The Tutors’ Association. You also have a local point of contact for any concerns at any time.

Do you offer in-home and online tutoring in Shinfield, and what does a typical session look like?

We offer one-to-one tutoring at home across Shinfield Village, Shinfield Park, Spencers Wood, Three Mile Cross, Ryeish Green and nearby, as well as online sessions for families who prefer that format. A typical lesson starts with a quick check of school work or the last session’s practice, then moves into targeted teaching and guided practice. We finish with a short recap, a simple action for the week, and a written report for you. Session length and frequency depend on your child’s goals and timetable. We schedule lessons to fit family routines.

Which areas around Shinfield do you cover?

We support families in and around Shinfield, including Shinfield Village, Shinfield Park, Spencers Wood, Three Mile Cross, Ryeish Green, Grazeley, Whitley Wood, Green Park, Earley, Lower Earley, Arborfield Cross, Woodley, Wokingham, Winnersh, Sindlesham, Calcot, Tilehurst, Sonning, Swallowfield and Mortimer. We work closely with schools under Wokingham Borough Council and Reading Borough Council, and we regularly support students who travel to schools in West Berkshire and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. If your area is not listed, ask us.
