Cambridge United Football Club, a professional football team in the UK’s Sky Bet League Two, has long been a pillar in English football. The Cambridge United Academy supports young footballers from age 8 and above, guiding them as they hone their skills and pursue their dreams. They also offer a football scholarship programme in partnership with Cambridge Regional College (CRC), which blends football training with academic study. This unique programme helps students balance their passion for football with the pursuit of a well-rounded education.
However, some students at the Academy wanted to explore academic subjects beyond the traditional offerings at CRC. This is where Tutor Doctor stepped in, providing tailored, flexible tuition to meet the specific academic needs of these young athletes.
Tutor Doctor’s Role in Supporting Cambridge United’s Students
Tutor Doctor has been part of the Cambridge community since 2010, offering in-home, one-to-one tuition for a wide range of subjects. Over time, we’ve built a solid reputation for delivering flexible, high-quality support to students at all levels, including those pursuing A-Levels. Our relationship with Cambridge United started with a parent’s inquiry about tutoring for their child, a talented footballer at the Academy.
The student had successfully completed their GCSEs and was keen to continue their studies while pursuing their footballing dreams. However, due to the demanding nature of their training schedule, they found it difficult to attend classes at their local college. Specifically, the student wanted to study A-Level Economics but couldn’t fit the lessons around their football commitments.
At Tutor Doctor, we provided a tutor who could work with the student during the evenings and weekends, accommodating their football schedule. This partnership was further supported by League Football Education (LFE), which has helped structure and finance the student’s A-Level studies alongside their football training.

Flexible, Personalised Tuition for Young Athletes
Since 2020, Tutor Doctor has continued to work with Cambridge United Academy, providing personalised tutoring for students pursuing A-Levels in subjects like Business Studies, Economics, Law, and Philosophy. This academic support is vital for students looking to excel in their studies while balancing the intense demands of their football training schedules.
All of our sessions were delivered online using our specialised tutoring platform, LessonSpace, which allows tutors to pre-load materials and work through them with students in real-time. Each session is one hour, and a full timetable is arranged at the beginning of the programme, ensuring that the academic and football commitments of each student are fully coordinated.
Our tutors work with students to develop key skills in their A-Level subjects, as well as essential exam techniques and study habits. This approach provides the flexibility that young athletes need to succeed in their academic goals while also achieving their football aspirations.
Looking Forward: Continuing to Support Scholar-Athletes
At Cambridge United, there’s a strong belief in the importance of education alongside athletic development. While the dream of becoming a professional footballer is incredibly rewarding, it’s also important to have an academic foundation to fall back on. The Academy encourages students to complete their A-Levels in addition to their BTEC qualifications in sports, recognising that a well-rounded education is critical for long-term success, whether or not a career in football is achieved.
