Mark Butler
Tutor Doctor Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge and Kingston-upon-Thames

Mark Butler

When Mark Butler's sons were in secondary school, he saw first-hand how many families struggle to find the right educational support, which inspired him and his wife Joanna to launch Tutor Doctor across Reading, Wokingham, Maidenhead and Walton-on-Thames in 2014. Mark brought years of business experience from his successful career in international stock photography, whilst Joanna had run her own podiatry practice, but they chose to redirect their skills towards something that would truly serve their local community. Over the past decade, they've delivered more than 118,000 hours of tutoring to pupils from primary through to A-Levels and adult learners. Mark personally conducts consultations with every family to understand their child's specific needs, then draws from his carefully vetted network of tutors to find the perfect match - he interviews every tutor in person as part of his commitment to quality control. All tutors are background-checked, and Mark ensures they're not just academically qualified but also the right personality fit for each pupil, providing one-to-one support that helps children build both knowledge and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does your tutoring in Addlestone work?

It starts with a free consultation. We listen to your child’s goals, school context, and how they like to learn. We then match your child with one of our local tutors who fits their subject needs and personality. Lessons are one-to-one, in your home in Addlestone or online, and scheduled at times that suit your family. After every session you receive a clear session report so you can see what was covered, what is improving, and what comes next. We support families across Addlestone and nearby areas including Weybridge, Chertsey, New Haw, Ottershaw, Woodham, Byfleet, West Byfleet, Addlestone Moor, Sayes Court, Row Town, Brooklands, Shepperton, Walton-on-Thames, Egham, Staines-upon-Thames, and Woking.

Do your local tutors follow the Surrey curriculum and UK exams like GCSEs and A-Levels?

Yes. Our local tutors plan around the work your child is doing in school and the requirements of the English national curriculum. For exam years, we tailor support to the relevant exam board, for example AQA, Edexcel or OCR. We cover GCSE subjects and A-Level subjects with a strong focus on exam technique, past papers, and mark schemes. If you are preparing for the 11+, we can help with English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning where it applies to selective schools in the wider area. We work closely with school targets and mock exam feedback to keep tutoring aligned with what your child needs in Addlestone and the Runnymede area under Surrey County Council.

Which subjects and year groups do you cover in Addlestone?

We support primary, secondary and sixth form students:
– Primary and KS2, including SATs preparation in Year 6.
– KS3 foundation building in English, maths and sciences.
– GCSEs in English language and literature, maths, combined and triple science, biology, chemistry, physics, plus humanities, languages and more.
– A-Levels in core subjects and many options, focusing on content mastery and exam technique. We also offer 11+ preparation in selective areas only. If you are unsure about your child’s level or subject mix, book a free consultation and we will advise on a clear plan.

Can you help if my child has lost confidence or has special educational needs?

Yes. Confidence comes first, marks follow. We match students with a tutor who teaches in a way that feels safe, patient and encouraging. Many of our local tutors have experience supporting neurodivergent learners, including students with dyslexia, ADHD or autism. We adapt pace, break down tasks, use multi-sensory strategies where helpful, and agree small, achievable goals. A local parent told us, “We’ve seen real progress, both in his studies and his self-esteem.” If you are worried about resistance to tutoring, our matching process focuses on fit so sessions feel positive and productive.

How do you track progress and keep parents informed?

You receive a written session report after every lesson that explains what was covered, how your child engaged, and the next steps. We set clear goals at the start, review them regularly, and adjust the plan if school priorities change, for example after a parents’ evening or mock results. Your local Tutor Doctor team also checks in with you so there is always a clear picture of progress and a quick response if anything needs to change.

How are your tutors vetted and safeguarded?

Tutor Doctor Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge and Kingston-upon-Thames follows a rigorous selection process. Our tutors complete multi-stage interviews, provide references, and hold an enhanced DBS check. They also complete safeguarding training. This gives families in Addlestone confidence that tutoring is delivered by suitable professionals who understand their responsibilities.

How soon can we start tutoring in Addlestone and when are sessions held?

It depends on your child’s subject, year group and availability. After the free consultation, we aim to introduce a well-matched tutor as quickly as possible. Lessons can take place after school, evenings or weekends. Online sessions offer extra flexibility, and we can arrange holiday revision blocks before GCSEs, A-Levels or SATs. Tell us your preferred times and we will build a timetable that works for you.

What makes Tutor Doctor Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge and Kingston-upon-Thames a good choice for tutoring in Addlestone?
