Saturday 8th March 2025 is International Women’s Day. It’s a time to honour the remarkable contributions of women throughout history and in contemporary society.
Last year, we highlighted several influential figures in our article, “Inspiring Females For All Students To Look Up To.” This year, we continue the celebration by focusing on four additional women whose achievements have left an indelible mark on the world.
1. Ada Lovelace (1815–1852)
Born in London, Ada Lovelace is often regarded as the first computer programmer. The daughter of poet Lord Byron, she inherited her mother’s passion for mathematics and science. Collaborating with Charles Babbage on his Analytical Engine, Lovelace wrote what is considered the first algorithm intended for processing, envisioning computers’ potential beyond mere calculation. Her foresight laid the groundwork for modern computing.
2. Emmeline Pankhurst (1858–1928)
A pivotal figure in the British suffragette movement, Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903. Known for its militant tactics, the WSPU campaigned vigorously for women’s right to vote. Pankhurst’s unwavering dedication was instrumental in securing voting rights for women in the UK, reshaping the nation’s political landscape.
3. Marie Curie (1867–1934)
Marie Curie, born in Poland and later becoming a naturalised French citizen, was a pioneering physicist and chemist. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and remains the only person awarded Nobel Prizes in two different sciences—physics and chemistry. Curie’s research on radioactivity advanced scientific understanding and led to practical applications in medicine, including the development of X-ray machines.
4. Malala Yousafzai (1997–Present)
Malala Yousafzai, born in Pakistan, is a global advocate for girls’ education. After surviving an assassination attempt by the Taliban at the age of 15 for attending school, she continued to champion education rights. In 2014, Malala became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Her courage and advocacy have inspired a worldwide movement for educational equity.
